Our neighbour Ken, arrives with his JCB and makes light work in removing the remaining tree stumps and roots. Something that would've taken me several hours and a very bad back, was completed in a flash. Where would we be without machines!?
There are two young trees to the side of our vegetable plot, which will cast a shade over and steal water away, from any vegetables that we decide to grow here.
After much deliberating, we have decided the best course of action is to remove these imposing young trees. Although this is unfortunate, it will give our vegetable plot the best possible chance of producing stellar crops. We will save any logs for heating fuel and smaller braches will be burned.
Felling complete, we are left with two stumps. One extremely large, too large to remove manually, so this will be taken care of with the aid of our neighbours JCB. Thank you Ken!
With the warm and wet weather we have been having lately, I have noticed that the weed seeds, turned over during cultivating, have started to emerge.
To help prevent this, we have placed a black plastic over the soil to act as a mulch by shutting out light required for germination.
Alternatives to black plastic could be compost, laid on the surface to at least 2" depth or cardboard. Be careful with old carpets however, as these can leak chemicals into the soil.
Be sure to put some bricks on top to stop it all blowing away!
